59 (73%) newly elected MLAs in Jharkhand have pending criminal cases against them

59 newly elected MLAs in Jharkhand (i.e 73%) have pending criminal cases against them according to their self sworn affidavits

Out of these 59 MLAs, 26, i.e. 32% have pending criminal cases of serious nature, like Murder, Attempt to Murder, Kidnapping, Theft etc.

14 related to attempt to murder, 4 cases related to murder, 14 cases related to theft, etc. among pending serious cases against the newly elected MLAs

More than 26% assembly crorepati in Jharkhand

Ranchi, December 26, 2009: Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW), a nationwide campaign comprising of more than 1200 NGOs and other citizen led organizations, has been working on electoral reforms, improving democracy and governance in India.

National Election Watch conducted election watches during Jharkhand Assembly Election 2009. The preelection reports were shared with the media. The reports included looking at the affidavits and disseminating information based on criminal, financial and other background information.

Now the election results are announced for the Jharkhand assembly election 2009, National Election Watch and its partner have analyzed the affidavits of all the elected representatives and have come out with this information.

The total no of contestants were 1491 for 81 seats of Jharkhand assembly election 2009. NEW has analyzed 1018 affidavits of candidates contesting for Jharkhand Assembly election 2009.
