64 candidates pending criminal charges contesting in 5th phase of Jharkhand assembly election 2009

64 candidates (39%) with self declared pending criminal charges contesting in fifth phase of Jharkhand assembly election 2009 on 18th December, 2009

Out of these 64 candidates, 36 candidates (22%) have declared serious IPC charges i.e. murder and attempt to murder charges against them

All major parties give ticket to candidate with serious pending criminal charges like kidnapping, murder, attempt to murder, dacoity, buying minor for prostitution etc. RJD‐7, JMM‐5, AJSU‐3, INC‐2, BSP‐4, JD(U)‐2

RJD’s candidate from Bishrampur besides other sections also booked under section 373 IPC which means ‘buying minor for the purpose of prostitution’.

138% Average increase in the assets of the 4 MLAs find to be recontesting in fifth phase

Ranchi, December 10, 2009: Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW), a nationwide campaign comprising of more than 1200 NGOs and other citizen led organizations, has been working on electoral reforms, improving democracy and governance in India.

NEW has analysed 164 affidavits of candidates contesting for 16 seats of fifth phase in Jharkhand. This report is based on the analysis of these affidavits.
