The second phase of elections in Jharkhand will be held on Tuesday. Campaigning, which saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi addressing meetings, ended on Sunday.

Among those whose electoral fate will be decided in this phase are the former Chief Ministers Arjun Munda and Madhu Koda; Agriculture Minister Banna Gupta; Human Resource Development Minister Geetashree Oraon; Industries Minister Champai Soren; and senior BJP leaders Saryu Rai and Raghuvar Das.

Eight of the 20 seats going to the polls are now held by the BJP, five by the JMM and two by the Congress. The remaining seats are held by Independents and smaller parties. Sixteen of the seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribes.

The BJP is contesting 18 seats, leaving two, Tamar and Jugsalai, to its alliance partner, the All-Jharkhand Students’ Union. The BJP, the Congress and the JMM have fielded four women each.

A report released recently by the Association for Democratic Reforms says 60 of the 223 candidates in this phase have criminal records.
