Even as rural voters are being lured with populist agenda as they are set to elect new members for Gram Sabha and Gram Panchayat, groups of non-governmental organisation and watchdogs of democracy have swung into action on time to educate voters about electing right representatives to the local bodies.

The group comprising Manthan Yuva Sansthan, Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), National Election Watch and Jharkhand Panchayat Resource Centre has taken a responsibility of preparing an environment that would ensure that the right people make their way into the lower democratic institutions.

“Our main objective is to strengthen panchayats and to conduct awareness drive to create such an environment that right people get elected for institutions of grass-root democracy,” said State coordinator of ADR, Sudhir Pal.

Notification for the first phase of the poll has been issued on October 23 as month long electoral process has begun and will culminate with declaration of results of fourth phase constituencies on December 12. Notification for phase second, third and four will be issued on October 29 and November 5, 12 correspondingly.

The forum will be using songs to aware a voter of the value of its vote and has created a compact disc comprising 10 songs that will be played in passenger vehicles during the elections. Street plays, awareness vehicle and interactive session between contestants and voters are on cards to create awareness among the voters.

According to sources, the forum has also sought the help of State Election Commission to run awareness campaign however it is yet get a reply from the commission.
