CHENNAI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has asked the Chief Secretary to file a report on the action taken to effectively stop the distribution of inducements in all forms in the Pennagaram Assembly Constituency where bypoll is to be held on Saturday. A release issued by ECI here on Thursday said that the commission had written to the Chief Secretary following complaints of distribution of liquor and money, besides sarees and dhotis to woo the electorate by various political parties.

“Effective action by the State government should be visible in the district immediately so that distribution of freebies are contained.” The ECI has called for a report from the Chief Secretary to reach the Commission by 10 am on Friday. “The Commission will assess the situation after getting inputs and will take a decision on futher action.” The Chief Secretary had also been asked to instruct the police to initiate tough measures to halt corrupt practices and punish the errant officials.
