NEW DELHI: As Anna Hazare's supporters swelled across the country, the befuddled political class may have got a sense of the shape of things to come when people picketed their homes across the country on Sunday. Heeding Anna's call that they should protest before their MPs demanding a stronger Lokpal, crowds turned out everywhere, from Delhi to Lucknow, and from Chandigarh and Ahmedabad to Nagpur and Ghaziabad.
More than 40 people squatted near Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's official residence, 7, Race Course Road, and bellowed slogans supporting Anna Hazare. The marchers were stopped some 200 metres before the PM's home and they claimed they were carrying flowers for him. "We just asked them not to go ahead," said Chanakyapuri Police Station in-charge Satish Sharma.
Homes of Congress MPs Pawan Kumar Bansal in Chandigarh and Manish Tiwari in Ludhiana were picketed. Jaskirat Singh, an IT professional and member of Association for Democratic Reforms, said, "Manish Tiwari is our MP but he doesn't care about our feelings. His remarks against Anna have hurt the entire country." Tiwari had called Anna and his group "over-ground Maoists" and "closet anarchists". Hindu-Sikh Jagriti Sena handed Tiwari a memorandum. "He should respect our support to Anna or resign and seek re-election from Ludhiana," said Praveen Dang, chief of the Jagriti Sena.
