The former chief minister of the north-east Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh is under arrest on corruption charges.

Gegong Apang is accused of helping embezzle billions of rupees in public funds while he was in power.

Mr Apang, who was detained at his residence in Itanagar, denies the accusations, saying he has been framed by his enemies.

He was chief minister for most of the past 25 years, but lost assembly elections in 2009.

His arrest follows the detention last year of one of his top officials, who is believed to have provided police with information.

It is alleged the money was siphoned off through inflated bills and false transport subsidies.
