PANAJI: The office of the chief electoral officer (CEO) for Goa will soon hold a meeting with all mamlatdars and apprise them of the uniform guidelines to be followed in enrolling new voters, chief minister Digambar Kamat assured the legislative assembly on Thursday.

Kamat's assurance came after Mapusa BJP MLA Francis D'Souza cited a TOI report dated August 4 which reported that citizens had been complaining about mamlatdars not following guidelines of the Election Commission of India (ECI) in enrolling new voters. The report also said that when citizens asked for supporting documents of enrollment applications under RTI, the mamlatdar said the documents were eaten by rats.

D'Souza expressed concern over the fact that different mamlatdars in Goa cite different criteria and demanding different documents to enrol new voters in the rolls despite the ECI laying down uniform guidelines for the purpose. He also demanded to know how supporting documents could be eaten by rats.

Responding to D'Souza, the chief minister confirmed that he too had received complaints that the mamlatdars were indeed following different procedures in enrolling new voters. Kamat said the office of the chief electoral officer in Goa will shortly hold a meeting with all mamlatdars and issue them uniform guidelines for new enrollment of voters.

Kamat also confirmed that supporting documents were eaten by rats. He, however, said that all data on the lost documents had been entered into computers and hence no data was actually lost.
