Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Assam Election Watch have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of all 126 winning candidates in the Assam 2026 Assembly Elections.
Criminal Background
Winning Candidates with Criminal Cases: Out of the 126 winning candidates analysed in 2026 21 (17%) winning candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. Out of 126 MLAs analysed during Assam Assembly elections in 2021, 34 (27%) MLAs had declared criminal cases against themselves.
Winning Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases: 19 (15%) winning candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves. Out of 126 MLAs analysed during Assam Assembly elections in 2021, 28 (22%) MLAs had declared serious criminal cases against themselves.
Winning Candidates with Declared Cases Related to Attempt to Murder: 3 winning candidates have declared cases related to Attempt to murder (IPC Section-307) and (BNS Section-109) against themselves.
Winning Candidates with Declared Cases Related to Crime Against Women: 2 winning candidates have declared cases related to crime against women.
Party Wise Winning Candidates with Criminal Cases: 7(9%) out of 82 winning candidates from BJP, 9 (47%) out of 19 winning candidates from INC, 2 (100%) out of 2 winning candidates from AIUDF, 1 (100%) out of 1 winning candidate from AITC, 1 (50%) out of 2 winning candidate from Raijor Dal and 1 (10%) out of 10 winning candidates from Asom Gana Parishad have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits. It is noted that the Bodoland Peoples Front won 10 seats, and all its winning candidates have clean backgrounds with zero criminal cases.

Crorepati Winning Candidates: Out of the 126 winning candidates analysed, 107 (85%) are crorepatis. Out of 126 MLAs analysed during Assam assembly elections 2021, 85 (67%) MLAs were crorepati.
Party-wise crorepati winning candidates: 74 (90%) out of 85 winning candidates from BJP, 14 (74%) out of 19 winning candidates from INC, 8 (80%) out of 10 winning candidates from Bodoland Peoples Front, 6 (60%) out of 10 winning candidates from Asom Gana Parishad, 2 (100%) out of 2 Winning candidates from Raijor Dal, 2 (100%) out of 2 Winning candidates from AIUDF and 1 (100%) out of 1 winning candidate from AITC have declared assets worth more than Rs. 1 crore.
