The petitioner argued that in the present scenario, there is no process to fin out if a vote by a voter has been cast, recorded and verified

The Supreme Court bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Bela M Trivedi  remarked that the PIL filed against the election processes in the country put on a lot of suspicion on the democratic process of elections.

A plea filed by Association for Democratic Reforms was being heard by the bench to match the votes cast by Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) and Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) so that the votes ' counted as recorded' and ' recorded as cast' can be checked if they are the same, without any discrepancies.

The petitioner argued that in the present scenario, there is no process to fin out if a vote by a voter has been cast, recorded and verified. Thus, they had filed the petition to ensure transparency.

The Court directed to serve a copy of the plea to the Counsel representing the Election Council of India.

The Court had previously rejected plea seeking verification of EVMs by VVPATs. Some leaders of various political parties had also filed petition regarding physical verification of VVPAT paper trails for half of the polling stations in 2019.
