In Tamil Nadu, 33 per cent of sitting MLAs have a criminal record. Of the total 204 MLAs, 68 have criminal cases against them, according to a report by the Association of Democratic Rights (ADR). According to the ADR, 38 (19 per cent) of the total sitting MLAs in Tamil Nadu, where assembly elections are to be held soon, have serious criminal cases against them. Meanwhile, 157 (77 per cent) MLAs in the assembly said they had assets worth crores. 89 (44 per cent) MLAs are in 5th to 12th class while 110 (54 per cent) are above degree. The ADR report said three MLAs were diploma holders. 78 MLAs are under 25 to 50 years of age while 125 MLAs are between 50 and 70 years of age. An MLA is 77 years old.
