MPs with criminal cases: Data released by the Association for Democratic Reforms on Tuesday claimed that 40 percent of the sitting MPs in both houses of parliament have criminal cases registered against them. 

The report is prepared by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and its association National Electoral Watch (NEW), an NGO that analyses election-related information.

The report claimed that the information was extracted by analyzing the self-affidavits of 763 sitting MPs from 776 seats ( Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha seats)  across the country.

MPs have criminal and serious criminal cases against them

According to ADR’s report, 306 out of 763, which is 40 percent, sitting MPs have declared criminal cases against themselves. The Data claimed 194, Which is 25 percent, sitting MPs have declared serious criminal cases against themselves, which include cases related to murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, crimes against women, etc.

Which parties have MPs with criminal cases

Bharatiya Janata Party – Out of 385, 98 (25%) MPs have criminal cases against them

Indian National Congress (INC) – Out of 81, 26 (32%) MPs have criminal cases against them

Trinamool Congress – Out of 36, 7 (19%) MPs have criminal cases against them

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) – Out of 6, 3 (50%) MPs have criminal cases against them

CPI (M) – Out of 8, 2 (25%) MPs have criminal cases against them

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) – Out of 11, 1 (9%) MPs have criminal cases against them

NCP – Out of 8, 2 (25%) MPs have criminal cases against them

Cases of murder, attempt to murder, and crimes against women

  • According to the report, 11 sitting MPs have had cases related to murder (Indian Penal Code Section 302) against themselves. 
  • 32 sitting MPs have declared cases related to attempted murder (IPC section 307). 
  • 21 sitting MPs have declared cases related to crimes against women. 
  • 4 MPs have declared cases related to rape (IPC section 376).
