Out of the 57 newly elected Rajya Sabha Members of Parliament, Telangana MP Bandi Partha Saradhi from TRS is the richest with over Rs 5,300 crore in total assets, according to the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) analyses of the self-sworn affidavits of the new members. The second richest out of them is MP from Uttar Pradesh, Kapil Sibal – who won as an independent candidate, backed by the Samajwadi Party – with total assets of over Rs 608 crore. He is followed by Aam Aadmi Party’s Vikramjit Singh Sahney, an MP from Punjab with total assets of over Rs 498 crore.

Out of the 57 newly elected MPs, 53 (93 per cent) are crorepatis. The MPs were also analysed for their criminal cases and out of the 57 MPs analysed, 23 (40 per cent) MPs had declared criminal cases against themselves. At least 12 (21 per cent) MPs have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to murder, attempt to murder, theft among others.

The parliamentarian with a declared case of murder against him, with IPC section 302, is BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh, Radha Mohan Das Agarwal. He has a total of two serious cases, with five serious IPC sections and seven other IPC sections.

There is also one MP who has declared case of attempt to murder under IPC section 307 against him, again a BJP MP, Anil Sukhdeorao Bonde from Maharashtra, with a total of 32 cases against him, which include five serious IPCs and 144 other IPC sections.

One MP who has declared a case of crime against women recorded against him is Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Rajaram Raut from Maharashtra, with IPC section 509 against him, relating to word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman. He has a total of 12 cases with six serious IPC sections and 26 other IPC.

From the total newly elected MPs, out of 22 MPs from BJP, 9 had criminal cases against them (41 per cent). From Congress, four (44 per cent) out of nine MPs had criminal cases against them, and from TRS, both the MPs had criminal cases against them (100 per cent). Same was the case for RJD with both MPs with criminal cases (100 per cent) against them. One MP each from YSRCP (25 per cent), DMK (33 per cent), AIADMK (50 per cent), SP (100 per cent), SHS (100 per cent), and an Independent (50 per cent) had declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
