The court had issued a warrant against him in a kidnapping case. He was to appear in court on 16 August, but on the same day, he took the oath of office. However, he says that the court has given him relief in this case only from August 12, till September 1.

The BJP has attacked the state government fiercely over this dispute over the law minister. BJP leader Rajya Sabha member Sushil Kumar Modi has said that it is a big mistake and negligence of Nitish Kumar to include a criminal like Karthik Singh in the cabinet. He has demanded the sacking of the Law Minister. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's reaction has also come to this controversy and BJP's statement. He has said that he is not aware of the allegations against Kartikeya Singh.
