The latest rape and murder case of a 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata has affected the political climate of the entire country. Following that, a report shared, the Association for Democratic Reforms examined 4,693 out of 4,809 affidavits of sitting MPs and MLAs submitted to the Election Commission of India during elections between 2019 and 2024. The results reveal statistics, featuring a total of 151 sitting MPs and MLAs accused of crimes against women.

As per the report, the organisation identified 16 MPs and 135 MLAs facing cases related to crimes against women. Moreover, West Bengal takes the top spot in the list with 25 sitting MPs and MLAs facing charges for crimes against women. The report sheds light on powerful men, using their seats and harassing women in the workplace and in general. The most political leaders in this list, belong to the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP). Furthermore, there are 16 sitting MPs and MLAs who have been accused of rape under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 376.

Most political leaders, taking the highest position of power in the system of law are facing rape charges. Furthermore, The Association For Democratic Reforms has pointed out the alarming need for political parties to refrain from giving tickets to candidates with criminal backgrounds, especially those with charges of rape and other crimes against women. Well, we hope for some change here.
