New Delhi: The BJP has received Rs 276.45 crore in corporate donations in 2019-20. This is 76.17 per cent of donations to political parties through electoral trusts. According to figures released by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), which monitors elections, the ruling party receives three-quarters of the major donations.

The Electoral Trust is a body set up to make the contributions of corporate companies to political parties transparent. The BJP got Rs 276.45 crore while the Congress got Rs 58 crore. The Aam Aadmi Party (11.2 crore), Samajwadi Party (2 crore) and Janata Dal United (1.25 crore) were the other major contributors.

In 2017-18, the BJP received Rs 167.8 crore. That is, 86.5 percent of the total contribution. In 2018-19, it was Rs 100.25 crore.

JSW Steel Ltd. made the largest contribution through the Electoral Trust in 2019-20 - `39.1 crore. Apollo Tires paid Rs 30 crore, Indiabulls Infra Estate and Delhi International Airport Rs 25 crore each.

Individuals or organizations can donate up to a maximum of Rs 20,000 to parties without disclosing their names. Further contributions should be made transparently through electoral trusts. It should also be made clear to which parties the money received by the trusts was paid.
