Former Assam MLA Naren Sonowal, who was the richest candidate in the 2021 Assembly election, was arrested for his involvement in illegal gambling.

Assam Police arrested former MLA Naren Sonowal on Thursday for his involvement in illegal gambling activities. He was the former representative of Naharkatia constituency and was one of the richest candidates contesting the 2021 Assam Assembly elections.

Six more people were arrested along with Sonowal in connection with the case. A team of Dibrugarh Police arrested the former Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) MLA and the rest of the accused from the Boiragimoth area in Dibrugarh.

The other six accused have been identified as Mukul Ghosh, Mehroz Ahmed, Dipendra Dutta, Ritwik Baruah, Abdul Rashid and Dipak Ranjan.

The officer in-charge of Dibrugarh police station, Raju Bahadur Chetry said, "Based on specific input, we conducted a raid at a house in the Boiragimoth area late on Thursday night and managed to arrest a total of seven persons who were found to be involved in illegal gambling activities."

Police recovered Rs 96,500 in cash during the raid along with a large amount of materials used in gambling activities. Further, police also seized a car and two motorcycles which belonged to the accused.

A case has been registered at the Dibrugarh police station to investigate the matter.

Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police (SP) Shwetank Mishra told India Today that the accused have been booked under Section 16 of the Assam Game and Betting Act.


According to the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), Sonowal was one of the richest candidates contesting the 2021 Assam Assembly elections with declared assets amounting to Rs 33 crore. During the 2016 Assam Assembly elections too, Naren declared his assets worth Rs 33 crore.

His known source of income is his salary and business, while his wife’s known source of income is only from business.

Naren Sonowal was elected to the Assam Assembly from the Naharkatia constituency in 2016.
