Do you know what is the total wealth of all the sitting MLAs in the country? Well, don’t scratch your head further as the total assets of 4001 sitting MLAs is a whopping Rs 54,545 crore. This has been revealed in a report released by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) after analysing the self-sworn affidavits of sitting MLAs in State Assemblies and Union Territories across the nation.

The data has been extracted from affidavits filed by the MLAs prior to contesting their last elections. The report covers 4001 sitting MLAs belonging to 84 political parties and independent MLAs.

Karnataka has the highest total asset of MLAs among states. As per the ADR report, the total asset of 223 MLAs analysed from Karnataka is Rs 14,359 crore, which is more than the individual annual budget of 2023-24 of Mizoram and Sikkim.

The report said it is 26 per cent of the combined total assets of all sitting MLAs, which stood at Rs 54,545 crore. “It is also more than the combined assets of sitting MLAs from Rajasthan, Punjab, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Chattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Goa, Meghalaya, Odisha, Assam, Nagaland, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Puducherry, Jharkhand, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

The total combined assets of sitting MLAs from these 21 States & UTs are Rs 13,976 crores,” the report said.

The 113 BJD MLAs have an average asset of over Rs 4 crore, the ADR report added.

State with Lowest Total Assets of MLAs

The total assets for 59 MLAs analysed from Tripura is Rs 90 crore, followed by 40 MLAs analysed from Mizoram is Rs 190 crore and 60 MLAs from Manipur have total assets worth Rs 225 crore.

Key Highlights

The total assets of 4001 sitting MLAs are Rs. 54,545 crore. This is more than the combined annual budget for 2023-24 of 3 states Nagaland, Mizoram and Sikkim totaling to Rs 49,103 crore. The annual budget 2023-24 of Nagaland is Rs 23,086 crore, Mizoram is Rs 14,210 crore and Sikkim is Rs 11,807 crore.

Party-wise total assets of sitting MLAs

The total assets for 1356 BJP MLAs analysed is Rs 16,234 crore, for 719 INC MLAs analysed is Rs 15,798 crore, for 146 YSRCP MLAs analysed is Rs 3,379 crore, for 131 DMK MLAs analysed is Rs 1,663 crore and 161 AAP MLAs have total assets worth Rs 1,642 crore.

The total assets of BJP & INC sitting MLAs are Rs 16,234 crore & Rs 15,798 crore, respectively, which add up to Rs 32,032 crore or 58.73% of the total assets of Rs.54,545 crore pertaining to the sitting MLAs of 84 political parties and Independent MLAs.
