42 per cent of BJP candidates have criminal cases pending against them in the seventh phase of Lok Sabha election

In phase 7 of Lok Sabha election, close to half of the total number of BJP’s candidates have criminal cases pending against them.

18 out of 43 (that’s 42 per cent) BJP candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves, according to Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

Out of the 909 candidates contesting in the last phase of national election, 170 have declared criminal cases against themselves in the self-sworn affidavits filed at the time of nomination.

The last phase of election is scheduled to be held on May 19.

6 out of 39 (15 per cent) candidates from BSP, 3 out of 14 (21 per cent) candidates and 29 out of 313 (9 per cent) independents have declared criminal cases against them.

The report went on to mention that 14 per cent candidates have serious criminal cases against them. Out of 909 candidates, there are 127 such contestants.

Among the major parties, 15 out of 43 (35 per cent) candidates from BJP, 10 out of 45 (22 per cent) candidates from INC, 4 out of 39 (10 per cent) candidates from BSP, 1 out of 14 (7 per cent) candidates and 24 out of 313 (8 per cent) independents are facing criminal charges. Also, there are 5 candidates who have declared convicted cases against them.

12 candidates have declared cases related to murder (IPC Section -302).

34 candidates have declared cases related to attempt to murder (IPC Section 307).

7 candidates have declared cases related to kidnapping (IPC Section-363), kidnapping or abducting in order to murder (IPC Section-364) and kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person (IPC Section-365) against them.

According to the report, 21 candidates have declared cases related to crime against women such as assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty (IPC Section-354), dowry death (IPC Section-304B), husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty (IPC Section-498A) etc and word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman (IPC Section-509) against them.

Among these 20 candidates, two have declared cases related to rape (IPC Section 376) against them. 10 candidates have declared cases related to hate speech against them.

There are 33 red alert constituencies in the phase 7 of Lok Sabha polls. Red alert constituencies are those constituencies where 3 or more contesting candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.

The ADR has analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 909 out of 918 candidates, who are contesting in the seventh phase of Lok Sabha election.
