BJP has most candidates with criminal cases. There are 22 (46 per cent) out of 48 BJP candidates who have declared criminal cases against themselves

In the fifth phase of polling scheduled for May 6, 126 out of 668 candidates have criminal cases against them. Of these, BJP has most candidates with criminal cases.

There are 22 (46 per cent) out of 48 BJP candidates who have declared criminal cases against themselves.

The candidates have declared crime against women, murder and kidnapping. There are 20 red alert constituencies where more than three candidates with criminal background are contesting.

As per the analysis done by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), 95(14%) out of 668 candidates analysed have declared serious criminal cases against themselves. Six candidates have declared convicted cases against themselves.

Among these, three candidates have declared cases related to murder (Indian Penal Code Section -302) against themselves. 21 candidates have declared cases related to attempt to murder (IPC Section 307) against themselves. Five candidates have declared cases related to kidnapping (IPC Section-363), kidnapping or abducting in order to murder (IPC Section-364) against themselves.

Nine candidates have declared cases related to crime against women such as assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty (IPC Section-354), husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty (IPC Section-498A) etc., Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman (IPC Section-509) and causing miscarriage without woman's consent (IPC Section-313) against themselves. Among these nine candidates, two have declared cases related to rape (IPC Section 376) against themselves. Five candidates have declared cases related to hate speech against themselves.

There are 22 criminal candidates from the BJP. Fourteen (31 per cent) out of 45 Congress candidates, 9 (27 per cent) out of 33 candidates Bahujan Samaj Party, 7 (78 per cent) out of 9 Samajwadi Party candidates, and 26 (10 per cent) out of 252 independent candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.

Nineteen (40 per cent) out of 48 BJP candidates, 13 (29 per cent) out of 45 Congress candidates, 7 (21 per cent) out of 33 BSP candidates, 7 (78 per cent) out of 9 Samajwadi Party candidates, and 18 (7 per cent) out of 252 independent candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

This time, 20 out of 51 constituencies are red alert constituencies. Red alert constituencies are those constituencies where three or more contesting candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.

The National Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 668 out of 674 candidates, who are contesting in the Lok Sabha Phase 5 election. There are six candidates who have not been analysed due to unavailability of their properly scanned and complete affidavits, at the time of making this report.
