Gujarat donated Rs 200 crore to political parties in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, making the state the top donor in the country, according to data released by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) on Wednesday.

The amount was nearly three times more than the Rs 67 crore collected as funds during the 2014 Lok Sabha election when the state took the third spot on the list of donors.

Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh were the other top donors, contributing Rs 142 crore and Rs 68 crore respectively. In contrast, expenditure in Gujarat was the third highest at Rs 55.8 crore. Of the total donations in Gujarat in 2019, BJP got Rs 179 crore whereas Congress got Rs 20.5 crore.

According to data, BJP spent Rs 54 crore and Congress Rs 1.5 crore. Only three parties received donations in 2019 compared to five in 2014. Most of the money was spent on “publicity” followed by “candidates” and “travels” as the heads indicate.

The data was compiled using the expenditure statement submitted by the national parties to the Election Commission of India.
