The recently held Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) elections have revealed interesting facts about the 111 corporators who have been elected to the Rs2,000 crore budget civic body. A recent survey by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Maharashtra Election Watch, which analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 105 of the winners says that 69 candidates are crorepatis (66%), of which 14 winners declared assets more than 14%.

ADR and Maharashtra Election Watch could not analyse the affidavits of 6 winners – 5 winners from Shiv Sena – Vinaya Madhavi, Vijay Choughule, Somnath Vaskar, Bahadur Bisht and Munawar Patel due to incomplete and unclear affidavits uploaded at the time of making of the report.

Netra Shirke from ward 91 in Nerul tops the list of rich candidates, with movable assets worth Rs5.38 crore and immovable assets worth Rs34.92 crore. The net worth of this NCP corporator from Nerul is over Rs40 crore. Closely following Shirke is Kishore Patkar, Shiv Sena corporator from ward no 64 in Vashi with net worth of over Rs37 crore plus.

There are 9 winners having high assets worth more than Rs5 crore who have not declared their PAN card details.

At 61%, 31 of the 51 NCP candidates analysed are crorepatis followed by Shiv Sena at 76% (25 of the 33 candidates). The average assets of winners of NMMC is Rs4.54 crore.

However, the candidates who fare high on the list of richness, pass the test of educational qualifications badly; 7 of the winning candidates are literates, 11 are 5th class pass, 13 are 8th class pass, 25 are 10th class pass, 19 are 12th class pass, 16 are graduates, 4 are graduate professionals, 6 are post-graduate, and 1 is a doctorate.
