Jaipur: The Congress party received merely Rs 88.21 lakh as donations from 65 donors contributing over Rs20,000 each in Rajasthan in a near-decade long period between 2003-04 and 2011-12, while the BJP received Rs98.89 lakh worth of donations from just 19 donors in that period.

The total income of the Congress coinciding roughly with this period was Rs2008 crore and that of BJP, Rs994 crore. The figures sound unbelievably low, but are based on the only official records - IT returns and list of donors over Rs 20,000 - available on political party funding provided by the income tax department to Delhi-based organisation Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Rajasthan Election Watch, which presented these findings in Jaipur on Wednesday.

The top donor to both parties from Rajasthan was CK Birla group company National Engineering Industries Ltd (known as NBC) which bestowed Rs 37.5 lakh on each party in 2009-10. Sanjay Singhal’s Secure Meters Ltd. in Udaipur, which has international operations in UK also figured on both parties’ donor lists, contributing Rs10 lakh to Congress and Rs1.7 lakh to BJP. Shree Cements has donated Rs2.5 lakh to the Congress.
