Out of the 733 candidates in fray for the Rajasthan state elections, selected randomly, as many as 111 candidates have criminal charges against them. Among these 111 candidates, about 62 face serious charges like murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, crime against women and criminal intimidation.

A total of 2,087 candidates contesting in Rajasthan have filed affidavits with the Election Commission, of which 733 affidavits were studies by Rajasthan Election Watch and Association of Democratic Reforms. It includes candidates from BJP, Congress, BSP, SP, CPM, CPI, NCP, 11 independent MLAs and others.

If party-wise breakup is taken into consideration as many as 28 candidates out of 199 candidates fielded by Congress have criminal cases against them. Similarly in the BJP, the number is a bit higher at 31 which is 16% of the total 199 candidates fielded. Of the 190 candidates in BSP, 26 have criminal cases while 37 CPM candidates, 15 have criminal cases against them.

As per their affidavits, most of the legislators like Kali Charan Saraf, Kiran Maheshwari, Pratap Singh Khachariyawas, Om Birla and others face charges of voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty or obstructing public servant from discharging his duties under IPC section 186.
