A decade in Parliament has coincided with a steep rise in personal wealth for many re-elected MPs across the country, with Gujarat figures featuring prominently in a new analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). The study, based on affidavits submitted to the Election Commission of India (ECI) in 2014 and 2024, examined asset declarations of 102 MPs who have completed at least 10 years in Parliament.

The ADR analysis found that these MPs recorded an average asset increase of Rs 17.36 crore over the decade. Eight of the 102 MPs analysed are from Gujarat, with most showing significant gains in their declared wealth between the two election cycles.

Among them, Jamnagar MP Poonam Madam stands out with one of the sharpest rises in assets nationwide. Her declared assets grew by Rs 130 crore over 10 years — from Rs 17.43 crore in 2014 to Rs 147.70 crore in 2024 — marking a jump of 747%. This is the second-highest increase recorded among all MPs studied, surpassed only by Satara MP Shrimant Udayaraje Bhonsle, whose assets rose by Rs 162 crore during the same period.

The report also notes that six other MPs from Gujarat declared asset growth ranging between Rs 2 crore and Rs 6 crore over the decade. In contrast, BJP state president and Navsari MP C R Paatil is the only Gujarat MP in the analysis to report a decline in assets. His declared wealth fell from Rs 74 crore in 2014 to Rs 39 crore in 2024, amounting to a reduction of 47%, according to his affidavits.
