There are a total of 145 candidates with a criminal background and 285 crorepati candidates, who are contesting the Chhattisgarh assembly elections 2018.

Association for Democratic Reforms has analysed the affidavits of 1,256 candidates of which 145 persons or 12 per cent of them have declared pending criminal cases against them.

Then number in comparison to the 2013 is slightly higher. That year 11 per cent or 113 candidates had declared pending criminal cases against them. The report also states that out of the 145, 98 or 8 per cent have declared serious criminal cases pending against them.

These cases range from attempt to murder, kidnapping etc. In the year 2013, there were 66 candidates who had declared serious criminal cases against them.

Party wise Candidates with Criminal Cases:

Among the major parties, 6 (7%) out of 90 candidates from Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), 25(28%) out of 90 candidates from Indian National Congress(INC), 17 (21%) out of 83 candidates from AAP, 18(32%) out of 56 candidates from Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (J), 3(9%) out of 34 candidates from BSP, and 39 (7%) out of 556 Independent candidates analysed have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
Among the major parties, 15(17%) out of 90 candidates from Indian National Congress (INC), 13 (16%) out of 83 candidates from AAP, 16(29%) out of 56 candidates from Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (J), 2(6%) out of 34 candidates from BSP, and 26 (5%) out of 556 Independent candidates analysed have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

The crorepatis:

Out of the 1256 candidates, 285(23%) are crorepatis. In 2013 Chhattisgarh Assembly Elections, out of 983 candidates, 213 (22%) were crorepatis.
Among the major parties 74(82%) out of 90 candidates from BJP, 66(73%) out of 90 candidates from INC, 39(70%) out of 56 candidates from Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (J), 13(16%) out of 83 candidates from AAP, 14(41%) out of 34 candidates from BSP and 52 (9%) out of 556 Independent candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs. 1 crore.
The average of assets per candidate contesting in the Chhattisgarh Assembly Elections is Rs 1.68 Crores. In 2013 Chhattisgarh Assembly Elections, average assets per candidate for 983 candidates was Rs. 1.42 crores.
Among major parties, the average assets per candidate for 90 BJP candidates is Rs. 4.51 crores, 90 INC candidates is Rs 10.02 crores, 83 AAP candidates have average assets of Rs 93.91 lakhs, 56 JCC (J) candidates have average assets worth Rs 5.23 Crores, 34 BSP candidates have average assets worth Rs 1.11 crores, and 556 Independent candidates have average assets of Rs. 45.94 lakhs. 19 candidates have declared zero assets in their self sworn affidavits.

Other details:

519(41%) candidates have declared their age to be between 25 to 40 years while 615 (49%) candidates have declared their age to be between 41 to 60 years. There are 121(10%) candidates who have declared their age to be between 61 to 80 years. 1 candidate has declared his age to be above 80 years.
125(10%) female candidates are contesting in the 2018 Chhattisgarh assembly election this year. In 2013 Chhattisgarh Assembly Elections, 81(8%) out of 983 candidates analysed were women.
