GUWAHATI: Assam MLAs have become richer over the last five years. Assam Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms have found that the average worth of assets of 90 sitting MLAs, who are re-contesting this time, is Rs 4.44 crore — a 76% jump over the 2016 figure of Rs 2.52 crore.

Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal's assets have grown by Rs 1.32 crore since 2016 elections. His asset value has increased to Rs 3.17 crores in 2021 from Rs 1.85 crores in 2016, marking 71% growth.
While BJP minister Naba Kumar Doley recorded the highest asset growth of Rs 18.22 crore in five years, Himanta Biswa Sarma is at number three with an asset growth of Rs 10.89 crore. At number two in this list is AIUDF MLA Nijam Uddin Choudhury whose asset worth has increased by Rs 11.10 crores to stand at Rs 13.81 crore — a significant jump from Rs 2.71 crore in 2016.
Doley, who is the MLA from Dhakuakhana, had assets worth Rs 7.3 crore in 2016. In 2021, it has ballooned to Rs 25.52 crore. Sarma, on the other hand, had assets worth Rs 6.38 crore in 2016. Now, it has nearly tripled to Rs 17.27 crore.
BJP MLA from Dhekiajuli, Ashok Singhal, is in the fourth position with assets worth over Rs 17 crore, a rise of Rs 9.82 crore.
Another minister in Sonowal’s government, Chandan Brahma of Bodoland People’s Front, is in the fifth spot with assets over Rs 16 crore, registering a growth of Rs 6.57 crore.
If growth percentages are considered, then it is AIUDF’s Choudhury who had 410% growth in assets, followed by Doley (250%) and Sarma (171%).

When considered party-wise, then it’s AGP whose 11 re-contesting MLAs have the highest average asset growth of Rs 6.05 crore. This was Rs 4.62 crore in 2016. BJP’s 45 re-contesting MLAs have an average growth of Rs 4.77 crore, up from Rs 2.29 crore in the last assembly elections.
The seven BPF MLAs have an average asset growth of Rs 4.35 crore, up from Rs 2.58 crore, while the seven AIUDF MLAs have an average growth of Rs 4.04 crore, up from Rs 1.94 crore in 2016.
Among all political parties, growth of assets has been the least for Congress’s candidates. From Rs 2.34 crore in 2016, the average assets of the 17 re-contesting MLAs has increased to Rs 3.32 crore.
