Jagdeep S Chhokar, 81, co-founder of the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), passed away after suffering a heart attack on Friday in Delhi.

According to sources close to his family, Prof. Chhokar, who is survived by his wife Kiran, suffered a heart attack at 3:3o am on September 12. He had been undergoing treatment for a fractured shoulder sustained in a fall and had also developed a lung infection during his recovery.

Free And Fair Elections

Prof. Chhokar was a staunch champion of electoral and political reforms. He was also a prolific writer, researcher, teacher, bird watcher, conservationist and a trainer lawyer. Prof. Chhokar was also known for his campaigns for free and fair elections, which led to a legal battle spearheaded by ADR that resulted in the Supreme Court declaring electoral bonds unconstitutional.

81 Years Of Jagdeep S Chhokar

Jagdeep S Chhokar began his career in the Indian Railways and continued his journey into academia after completing his MBA degree from the Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi University. He then went on to Louisiana State University to pursue his PhD course, following which he joined the Indian Institute of Ahmedabad as a Professor in the Organizational Behaviour Area in 1985, and later retired in November 2006. He has taught in several countries, including Australia, France, Japan, and the US.

His writing has also appeared in several international journals, such as Journal of Applied Psychology, Columbia Journal of World Business (now called the Journal of World Business), International Labour Review, Industrial Relations, and Journal of Safety Research.

Prof. Chhokar was the lead editor of a volume titled Culture and leadership across the world: The GLOBE Book Of In-Depth Studies Of 25 societies, brought out by the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) Research Programme, and published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Mahwah, N.J. (now Routledge/Psychology Press), in 2007.
