As many as 10 per cent of candidates, in fray for 21 October Assembly polls in Haryana, have declared criminal cases against themselves.

As per the self-sworn affidavits of 1138 out of 1169 candidates, who are contesting in the Haryana Assembly elections, analysed by the Haryana Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), 117 candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. Of these, 70 (six per cent) have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

Among major parties, 13 (15 per cent) out of 87 candidates analysed from Congress, 12 (14 per cent) out of 86 candidates analysed from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), 10 (11 per cent) out of 87 candidates analysed from Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), seven (nine per cent) out of 80 candidates analysed from Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and three out of 89 candidates from BJP have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Among major parties, nine (11 per cent) out of 86 candidates analysed from BSP, eight (nine per cent) out of 87 candidates analysed from Congress, six (seven per cent) out of 87 candidates analysed from JJP,  five out of 80 candidates analysed from INLD and one out of 89 candidates from BJP have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Five candidates have declared cases related to crime against women. Out of these five candidates, two candidates have declared cases related to rape. Five candidates have declared cases related to attempt to murder (IPC Section-307) against themselves. Eleven candidates have declared convicted cases against themselves. In 15 out of 90 constituencies, three or more contesting candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.

When it comes to financial background, out of the 1138 candidates analysed, 481 (42 per cent) are crorepatis. Among major parties, 79 out of 87 candidates analysed from Congress, 79 out of 89 candidates analysed from BJP, 62 out of 87 candidates analysed from JJP, 50 out of 80 candidates analysed from INLD and 34out of 86 candidates from BSP, have declared assets worth more than Rs One crore.

Among major parties, the average assets per candidate for 89 BJP candidates is Rs 11.62 crore, 87 Congress candidates is Rs 13.72 crore, 87 JJP candidates have average assets of Rs 11.29 crore, 86 BSP candidates have average assets worth Rs 2.48 crore, 80 INLD candidates have average assets worth Rs 4.05 crore and 366 independent candidates have average assets worth Rs 1.79 crore.
