Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW) have analyzed the criminal, financial and other background details of 225 of the 233 Rajya Sabha MPs. About 23 out of 85 Rajya Sabha MPs from BJP, 12 out of 30 MPs from Congress and 4 out of 13 MPs from TMC have declared criminal cases against themselves.
The Association for Democratic Reforms has told in one of its analysis that about 12 percent of the sitting MPs of Rajya Sabha are billionaires and Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have the highest percentage of such MPs.
According to a report published in The Print, Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW) have analyzed and updated the criminal, financial and other background details of 225 of the 233 Rajya Sabha MPs.
According to the report, one seat is vacant in the current Rajya Sabha. 5 out of 11 MPs from Andhra Pradesh (45%), 3 out of 7 MPs from Telangana (43%), 3 out of 19 MPs from Maharashtra (16%), 1 out of 3 MPs from Delhi (33%), Punjab 2 out of 7 MPs from MP (29 per cent), 1 out of 5 MPs from Haryana (20 per cent) and 2 out of 11 MPs from Madhya Pradesh (18 per cent) have declared assets of more than Rs 100 crore.
The seven Members of Parliament (MPs) analyzed from Telangana have total assets of Rs 5,596 crore, 11 MPs from Andhra Pradesh have total assets of Rs 3,823 crore and 30 MPs from Uttar Pradesh have total assets of Rs 1,941 crore.
Of the 225 Rajya Sabha MPs analysed, 75 (33 per cent) have declared criminal cases against themselves.
In addition, about 41 (18 per cent) Rajya Sabha MPs have declared serious criminal cases and two members have declared cases related to murder (IPC section 302) against themselves.
Four Rajya Sabha MPs have declared cases related to crime against women. Congress’s KC Venugopal, a Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan, has declared a case related to rape (IPC section 376) against him.
About 23 out of 85 Rajya Sabha MPs from BJP (27 percent), 12 out of 30 MPs from Congress (40 percent), 4 out of 13 MPs from TMC (31 percent), 5 out of 6 MPs from RJD (83 percent), CPI(M) has 4 out of 5 MPs (80 percent), AAP 3 out of 10 MPs (30 percent), YSRCP 3 out of 9 (33 percent) and NCP 2 out of 3 Rajya Sabha MPs (67 percent) Has declared criminal cases against himself in the affidavit.
