The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW) have released a report on sitting MLAs and MPs who have declared cases related to crimes against women. According to the report, out of a total of 4,763 sitting MPs and MLAs, 134 have declared cases related to crimes against women. The report is based on the analysis of 4,763 out of 4,809 sitting MPs and MLAs.
The report includes an analysis of the affidavits submitted for by-elections held in the last 5 years, as well as the affidavits of sitting MPs and MLAs from 28 states and two Union Territories. It should be noted that the current status of the criminal cases mentioned in these affidavits may vary.
Among the 134 sitting MPs and MLAs with declared cases related to crimes against women, 21 are MPs and 113 are MLAs.
These cases include charges such as assault, kidnapping, rape, cruelty to women, buying minors for prostitution, and insulting the modesty of a woman.
Among the political parties, the BJP has the highest number of sitting MPs/MLAs with such cases, followed by INC and AAP.
In terms of states, West Bengal has the highest number of sitting MPs/MLAs with such cases, followed by Maharashtra and Odisha.
Furthermore, the report recommends that candidates with a criminal background, especially in cases related to crimes against women, should be debarred from contesting elections. It also emphasizes the need for fast-tracked court cases and thorough investigations.
