The 175 MLAs who emerged victorious in the recent elections in Andhra Pradesh captured an impressive average of 55.8% of total votes cast in their respective constituencies — a significant increase from the nearly 50.8% achieved in the 2019 elections.

The NDA alliance of TDP, BJP, and Jana Sena, which coordinated their voter support effectively, likely bolstered the winners’ improved electoral performance.

AP MLAs’ vote share jumps to 56%, up from 51% in 2019

According to an analysis by Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), only 13 TDP legislators (constituting 10% of its total MLA count) clinched victory with less than 50% of total votes cast in their respective constituencies. For YSRCP, which won only 11 seats, this figure stood at 55%. For BJP and Jana Sena, it was 13% and 5%, respectively.

Apart from former chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the remaining 40 MLAs who secured over 60% of the vote share belong to the NDA alliance, including 14 Jana Sena MLAs. Vamsi Krishna Srinivas, Jana Sena MLA from Vizag South, garnered the highest vote share among all 175 MLAs elected to the current assembly, securing over 70.2% of the total votes cast in his constituency.

Dr Nimmala Ramanaidu of TDP from Palakollu followed closely with a vote share of 69.3%. YSRCP’s Regam Matyalingam from Araku yalley constituency received the lowest vote share, with only 36.71% of polled votes.

The 2024 elections in Andhra Pradesh saw participation from 88 political parties and independents, a significant increase from the 69 parties that contested in 2019. This marks a 28% rise in the number of political entities involved, highlighting a diverse and competitive electoral landscape.

In terms of party performance, TDP emerged as the dominant force with 135 seats and a 45.6% vote share. YSRCP, which garnered a 49% share of total votes cast in 2019, secured second place with 39.37% vote share in the recent polls. Jana Sena achieved a perfect strike rate by winning all 21 MLA seats it contested. BJP also saw an increase in its vote share, rising to 2.83% from nearly 1% in the previous elections. Out of the 3.37 crore votes polled in the assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, nearly 3.69 lakh votes were cast for NOTA (none of the above) option.

Two MLAs won with a margin of less than 1,000 votes — MS Raju (315 winning margin) from Madakasira and Ashok Reddy Muthumula (973) from Giddalur.
