Nearly 45% per cent of the candidates who won the recently held assembly elections in five states have declared criminal cases against themselves. This information was given on Tuesday by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), an election reform advocacy group. The ADR has drawn this conclusion on the basis of analysis of the affidavits of all the 690 candidates who won the assembly elections in Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Out of these 690 candidates, 219 (32%) winning candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves. It states that 87 per cent or 598 winning candidates are crorepatis and their winning candidates have an average net worth of Rs 8.7 crore.

In Goa, 40 per cent of the winning candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves while 33 per cent have serious criminal cases against them. In UP, 51 per cent of the winning candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves while 39 per cent have serious criminal cases against them. In Punjab, this percentage is 50 (criminal cases) and 23 (serious criminal cases) respectively. In Uttarakhand, 27 per cent of the winning candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves while 14 per cent have serious criminal cases against them. Similarly, in Manipur, 23 per cent of the winning candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves while 18 per cent have serious criminal cases against them.

The 33 winning candidates (29 of them from UP) have reported cases of attempt to murder against themselves while 12 (of which six are from UP) have reported cases of crime against women. have declared. The six winning candidates have declared cases related to murder in their affidavits. The 312 winners who have declared their criminal cases include 134 from BJP, 71 from Samajwadi Party, 52 from Aam Aadmi Party, 24 from Congress and 7 from Rashtriya Lok Dal.
