A court in India has found a former state legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) guilty of raping a girl in 2017 when she was a minor.

Kuldeep Singh Sengar was a legislator in India’s northern state of Uttar Pradesh, was convicted by a court in New Delhi under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act while Kuldeep Singh Sengar had pleaded not guilty.

A girl accused BJP leader Kuldeep Singh that he kidnapped and raped her for more than a week with others.

53 years old Kuldeep Singh Sengar was a legislator in India’s northern state of Uttar Pradesh, was convicted by a court in New Delhi under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act while Kuldeep Singh Sengar had pleaded not guilty.

A girl accused BJP leader Kuldeep Singh that he kidnapped and raped her for more than a week with others.

The girl’s family also accused Sengar’s brother, Atul Sengar, of assaulting the girl’s father in April 2018. The police charged five men for the attack but they also arrested her father on the charge of illegally possessing firearms. He died later in prison.

Later on 8 April 2018, she attempted to set herself on fire outside the home of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, alleging that she had been purposely denied justice.

After that incident massive protests were held across India demanding justice for victim.

Following the protest India’s federal investigation agency took over the case and arrested Atul Sengar and 10 others on charges of murder. The case is still ongoing. Atul Sengar has not responded to the charges.

It is pertinent to mention here that Indian ruling party BJP has the highest number of MPs and MLA’s which are facing criminal charges.

21 lawmakers of BJP are facing cases related to crime against women like Rape and harassment followed by Congress (16) and YSRCP (7), according to election watchdog Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

About 40% of the candidates fielded by Bharatiya Janata Party in 2019 general elections have a criminal case against them.
