90 candidates have declared serious criminal cases, including bribery, causing death by negligence, criminal intimidation and attempt to murder, against themselves.

The second phase of assembly polls in Chhattisgarh will have 130 of the 1,057 candidates with criminal antecedents, according an analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

In all, 90 candidates have declared serious criminal cases, including bribery, causing death by negligence, criminal intimidation and attempt to murder, against themselves.

Among those having admitted in the affidavit to having a criminal record are 18 from the Congress, 6 from the BJP, 15 from the Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (J) and 17 from AAP.

There are 36 of the 483 independent candidates with declared criminal cases. “Among the major parties, 11(15%) out of 72 candidates from Indian National Congress (INC), 13(20%) out of 66 candidates from AAP, 14 (30%) out of 46 candidates from Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (J) (JCC) and 24 (5%) out of 483 independent candidates analysed have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits,” said the ADR.

In the second phase, 17 constituencies have three or more candidates with criminal cases.

Of the total candidates, 239 are crorepatis and 53 of them are from the Congress, 61 from the BJP, 35 from the JCC(J), 13 from AAP and 12 from the BSP.

“The average of assets per candidate contesting in the second phase of the Chhattisgarh Assembly Elections is ₹1.73 crore,” said the report.

A total of 233 candidates have not declared their PAN details, 61 have not shared their sources of income and 630 have not disclosed income tax details for various reasons, of whom 30 have more than ₹1 crore assets.
