According to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), out of 229 Rajya Sabha MPs, 73 (32%) have declared criminal cases against themselves. Meanwhile, about 14% of MPs have declared assets worth billions of rupees. This report is based on affidavits of 229 out of 233 MPs. One seat is vacant, and data for three MPs was not available. It also includes 37 recently elected MPs. Out of the 73 MPs with criminal cases, 36 (16%) face serious charges. One MP has a murder case, four MPs face attempted murder charges, and three have cases related to crimes against women. 31 MPs are billionaires The report says that 31 MPs (14%) have assets worth over ₹1,000 crore. Several MPs from major political parties have declared assets above ₹100 crore. This includes 6 MPs from Bharatiya Janata Party, 5 from Indian National Congress, 4 from YSR Congress Party, 2 from Aam Aadmi Party, 2 from Bharat Rashtra Samithi, 3 from Nationalist Congress Party, and 9 from other parties. On average, a Rajya Sabha MP has assets worth around ₹120.69 crore. AAP MPs have an average ₹574.09 crore The list includes six MPs from the Bharatiya Janata Party, five from the Indian National Congress, four from the YSR Congress Party, two from the Aam Aadmi Party, two from the Bahujan Samaj Party, three from the Nationalist Congress Party, and nine from other parties. The average Rajya Sabha MP has assets worth around ₹120.69 crore. Assets vary widely by party. BJP MPs have an average of ₹28.29 crore, Congress MPs ₹128.61 crore, All India Trinamool Congress MPs ₹17.70 crore, and AAP MPs ₹574.09 crore. Other parties include Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (₹11.90 crore for 8 MPs), YSR Congress Party (₹522.63 crore for 7 MPs), Samajwadi Party (₹399.71 crore for 4 MPs), and Biju Janata Dal (₹105.63 crore for 6 MPs). BRS MP has assets worth ₹5,300 crore Bandi Partha Saradhi of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi from Telangana has the highest declared assets at ₹5,300 crore. He is followed by Rajinder Gupta of AAP with ₹5,053 crore and Ayodhya Rami Reddy of YSRCP with over ₹2,577 crore. At the lower end, Sant Balbir Singh of AAP has assets of around ₹3 lakh. Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba from Manipur has about ₹5 lakh, and Prakash Chik Baraik of TMC has around ₹9 lakh. 40% of Chief Ministers have criminal cases Out of 30 Chief Ministers in the country, 12 (40%) have declared criminal cases against them. Of these, 10 (33%) face serious charges such as attempted murder, kidnapping and bribery. Revanth Reddy has the highest number of cases among them, with a total of 89 cases. Half of the country’s MPs and MLAs have criminal cases According to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms, 45% of MLAs across the country have declared criminal cases against themselves, while 29% face serious charges. Meanwhile, 46% of MPs also have criminal cases registered against them. West Bengal has the highest number of cases related to crimes against women, followed by Andhra Pradesh. 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill introduced The central government introduced the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill during the monsoon session of Parliament. The bill proposes that if the Prime Minister, Chief Minister, or any Minister is arrested in a criminal case and remains in jail for 30 days, they can be removed from office.
