Criminal cases among winning candidates vary by party, with Congress at 47%, BJP at 9%, and full declarations from AIUDF and AITC.

In a notable contrast to broader concerns over criminalisation in politics, all 10 winning candidates of the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) in the Assam Assembly Elections 2026 have declared zero criminal cases, according to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Assam Election Watch.

The finding stands out even as the overall results once again spotlight criminal antecedents among elected representatives, with 21 (17 per cent) of the 126 winning candidates declaring criminal cases against themselves. Of these, 19 (15 per cent) face serious charges.

The ADR report, based on analysis of self-sworn affidavits of all winning candidates, further revealed that among those with declared cases, three MLAs face charges related to attempt to murder, while two have cases linked to crimes against women.

A party-wise breakdown shows significant variation. Among major parties, 9 (47 per cent) of 19 Congress winners have declared criminal cases, compared to 7 (9 per cent) of 82 BJP MLAs. All winning candidates from AIUDF (2), AITC (1), and Raijor Dal (1 out of 2) have declared cases, while 1 (10 per cent) out of 10 AGP MLAs reported criminal cases.

A similar trend is observed in serious cases, with 7 Congress MLAs (37 per cent) and 7 BJP MLAs (9 per cent) declaring serious charges, alongside full representation from smaller parties like AIUDF and AITC.

Beyond criminal records, the report also highlights a sharp rise in the wealth of elected representatives. As many as 107 (85 per cent) of the 126 winning candidates are crorepatis, up from 67 per cent in 2021.

Party-wise, the BJP leads with 74 (90 per cent) crorepati MLAs, followed by Congress with 14 (74 per cent). The BPF accounts for 8 (80 per cent) crorepati legislators, while all MLAs from AIUDF, Raijor Dal, and AITC fall in the crorepati category.

The average assets of winning candidates have risen significantly to Rs 8.82 crore, nearly doubling from Rs 4.59 crore in 2021, and marking a steep increase from Rs 2.45 crore in 2016 and Rs 1.65 crore in 2011.

Among parties, AIUDF MLAs reported the highest average assets at Rs 117.77 crore, followed by BPF at Rs 9.92 crore, BJP at Rs 7.50 crore, and Congress at Rs 6.51 crore.
