Gujarat has a relatively low share of dynastic politics with only 12% of the elected members of Parliament and state legislative assembly from political families, according to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). The share was much lower compared to 23% in Bihar, 29% in Karnataka, 32% in Maharashtra and 35% in Haryana, among others.

Of the 5,204 sitting MPs, MLAs, and MLCs, 1,107 (21%) have dynastic backgrounds. Notably, dynastic representation is highest in the Lok Sabha at 31% and lowest in state assemblies at 20%, the report reads.

Overall, the share of such candidates is relatively higher in unrecognised parties and among independents at 24% compared to state parties (22%) and national parties (20%). The number of women candidates is higher compared to men, the report added.

The numbers suggest that dynasticism is not merely about "inheritance of seats", but a structural feature across geographies, parties and genders, the report added.
