Eight candidates who had contested the March 2012 assembly elections from South Goa have failed to submit their details of the election expenses to the district election officer within the stipulated time, while two submitted their accounts after the due date.

The South Goa district election officer has compiled the names of the defaulters to be forwarded to the chief election officer for necessary action. April 5 was the last date for filing accounts of the election expenses.

Sources said that Arthur D'Silva, chairperson of the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), who had contested the assembly elections as an independent from Fatorda, filed his account statement on April 10, while former chairperson of the MMC Savio Coutinho, who had fought the elections against former chief minister Digambar Kamat from Margao on the Trinamool Congress (TC) ticket, submitted his expenses on April 9.

The names of those who have failed to submit their accounts are as follows: Prashant Vasta (independent candidate from Vasco), Pratap Mardolkar (TC candidate from Dabolim), Prabhakar Gawde (TC candidate from Nuvem), Peter Dourado (independent candidate from Nuvem), Piedade Noronha (TC candidate from Fatorda), Iliyas Shaikh (independent candidate from Navelim), Brany Fernandes (UGDP candidate from Cuncolim), and Mario Moraes (TC candidate from Cuncolim).

The EC had stipulated a ceiling of 8 lakh on the election expenses of a candidate.

Sources in the district election office, South Goa, said that the candidates who have defaulted in submitting their accounts within the due date will be sent notices and asked for an explanation.
