The majority of candidates contesting the Delhi Assembly elections on February 5 belong to the 41-50 age group, according to a report released by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). The report, which analyses the age demographics and educational qualifications of candidates, is based on affidavits submitted with their nomination papers.
The total number of candidates analysed for this election has risen to 699, compared to 672 in the 2020 Assembly polls.
According to the analysis, 235 candidates fall within the 41-50 age bracket, a significant increase from 199 in the previous election.
Over 70 Age Group: The report also highlighted a notable rise in the number of senior candidates. This year, 19 candidates are aged 70 or above, compared to just 11 in 2020. The oldest contestant in the fray is Rajender, an 88-year-old candidate from the Aam Janmat Party.
25-30 Age Group: On the other hand, the participation of younger candidates has declined. The number of candidates aged between 25 and 30 has dropped from 57 in the 2020 elections to 46 this year. Among them, Bhawana, an Independent candidate, and Harshad Chadha from the Bahujan Samaj Party, both 25, are the youngest contestants.
The Delhi Assembly elections for 70 seats are set to take place on February 5, with the counting of votes scheduled for February 8. The ADR report provides insights into the changing demographic trends and political participation in the capital’s electoral landscape.
